When Did Humans Start to Use Coal?
Coal has warmed homes and fueled industries for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that people in Europe’s Stone Age settlements (around 25,000–23,000 BC) already used coal for fire. In ancient China (as far back as 3490 BC), coal was burned for heating and cooking, and even carved into ornaments.
By the Roman era, coal was a familiar energy source across Britain. The Romans used it to heat their famous bathhouses and to smelt metals. Along the North Sea coast, an early trade in coal developed. Yet after Rome’s fall, coal use in Britain remained patchy until medieval times, when blacksmiths and households in coal-rich regions began using it more widely.
It was the Industrial Revolution (18th–19th centuries), with its steam engines, railways, and new industries, that turned coal into the backbone of modern life.

The Coalman and His Horse & Cart
For much of the 19th and early 20th century, the friendly figure of the coalman was a common sight. With a strong back and a steady horse, he delivered heavy sacks door-to-door, tipping coal into cellars through the coal hole.
This was the golden age of the local merchant, when every street and village had its own trusted supplier.

Coal by Rail – Sidings and Yards
The expansion of the railways transformed Britain’s coal trade. Sidings filled with wagons branded by merchants supplied towns and cities across the country. Coal yards grew up near stations, where merchants could unload, store, and redistribute sacks.
These bustling yards became the heart of local communities, keeping homes and industries supplied through winters and wars alike.

The Local Coal Yard
By the mid-20th century, lorries had replaced the horse and cart, but the rhythm was much the same. Coalmen stacked sacks by hand, customers called into the yard for a bag or two, and the coal trade remained personal and dependable.

From Soot to Smokeless – A Cleaner Future
Today, the world has changed. Families no longer rely on sooty house coal delivered loose from a cart. Instead, smokeless fuels and kiln-dried logs are clean, efficient, and packaged in durable 20–25 kg bags.
At Barrett’s Coal Ltd, we deliver across Lincolnshire and nationwide by the pallet — blending centuries of tradition with modern convenience. Customers now enjoy the same warmth, but with lower emissions, cleaner chimneys, and fuels approved for today’s stoves and open fires.

Barrett’s Coal – Our Story Continues
